Mummy's Chocolate Cake

Unknown-3.jpg

The project started in 2006 when I decided to write down a few favourite recipes for family and friends. This coincided with my initiation into printmaking; etching, Lino printing, lithography and collagraphs.

After a short intensive summer course at Heatherleys School of Art in London, I was instantly in love with this form of image making and the freedom it unleashed by the versatility of the medium.

The years rolled on and the collection of recipes grew as did the stack of prints and images in my studio.

Then, one day, I discovered the Whittington Press at Cheltenham.

Quite by chance, I stumbled on a book they had produced about Venice.

I was dazzled.

After a little research I found their contact details and spoke to John Randle, the owner of the press. He advised me to contact his son Pat, also at Whittington, who had started his own side of the business. I made an appointment to visit them the following week, the die was cast.

John and Pat greeted me in their inimitable warm way with a large cup of tea, open minds, and boundless enthusiasm.

After a tour of the press and awe-struck by the beauty of the Victorian machines and the Dickensian world of letter-press printing I knew that this was how I wanted my book to be published.

Mummy’s Chocolate Cake, a collection of recipes and memories, was born.
